Walk&Talk Sustainability

Walk&Talk Sustainability was a guided sustainability tour during Stockholm Furniture Fair. I led visitors through the fair and showed concrete examples of sustainable and circular design, grounded in my design framework: form follows planetary boundaries.

During the tour, I looked for companies that have set Science Based Targets ( SBTi) or have a concrete plan to halve their emissions by 2030, and for furniture with a life cycle assessment (LCA) or environmental product declaration (EPD).

The planetary boundaries, A Safe Operating Space for Humanity (Rockström, J., Steffen, W. et al. 2009), are the foundation for how I think about design. Of the nine planetary boundaries, climate and biodiversity are the most urgent. For furniture in general, at least 50 percent of the carbon footprint comes from the materials, making material choice one of the most important decisions we make as designers.

Walk&Talk was a way of making that knowledge visible and accessible, in the very place where the industry meets.
