Insjön Väveri
There are places where craft has never been interrupted. Insjöns Väveri in Dalarna is one of them. Since 1947, the same factory has produced textiles using largely the same machinery — a continuity that is in itself a statement. Daladräll is one of Sweden’s most beloved weaving patterns, with roots in 17th-century Europe and a particular home in the parishes around Leksand and Gagnef. A tradition that lives on in full force.
When Ersta Diakoni asked me to help develop a commemorative collection for their 175th anniversary, I immediately thought of Insjöns Väveri — Swedish production, tradition and high quality, exactly what Ersta had in mind. The colour palette finds its starting point in the work I carried out on the interior of Ersta New Hospital on Södermalm in Stockholm. There I developed a colour and materials concept to create an environment where people feel welcomed, seen and cared for — a palette of light, warm earth tones rooted in the history of the place. These are design principles I bring with me into every project. Regardless of scale, it always comes down to the same thing: how design can frame and enrich everyday life.
The collection consists of towels and napkins in linen and cotton, in two colour combinations: ochre and pink, ochre and green. Colours that are warm, timeless and classic.
We share the same fundamental values — honest materials, local production, a long-term perspective. Insjöns Väveri produces everything on site in Dalarna, using methods that have stood the test of time not because they are nostalgic, but because they work. Design made to live with for a long time. It is an approach close to my own, and a reminder that design is about more than form. It is about the choices we make — in materials and in design — and the legacy we wish to leave behind.
— There is a natural connection between the two projects. At Ersta, it was about creating spaces where people can feel seen and cared for, with materials and colours that endure and connect to history. That is exactly the feeling I have brought with me into this collaboration with Insjöns Väveri.
Insjöns Väveri holds a Royal Warrant and has been owned since 2021 by Ebba Kleberg von Sydow and Johan Kleberg. The collection is available in at NK and Bookbinders Design in Stockholm, Insjöns Väveri’s webshop and at the mill store at Insjövägen 59 in Leksand.
