1kgCo2e at Axfoundation

1kgCO2e exists as a permanent exhibition at Torsåker, Axfoundation’s experimental farm, as part of their work on the materials of the future. The question is the same as always: how much of a material do you get for one kilogram of greenhouse gases counted as carbon dioxide equivalents?

In Axfoundation’s version, the texts have widened the perspective. Climate is one boundary, but not the only one. Of the nine planetary boundaries, six have already been exceeded: biodiversity, land use, water consumption. Every material choice is a decision that touches more than a single metric. Material consumption has tripled over the past fifty years. Without change, it is projected to increase by a further 60 percent by 2060. Today, only 7.2 percent of all the material we use is recirculated, the rest is counted as waste. Waste is not an outcome. It is a design flaw.

Axfoundation works to transform residual materials and waste into resources, and to promote local and biobased materials as alternatives to fossil-based and globally vulnerable supply chains. It is an approach close to my own. The solutions exist. The task is for more of us to start using them.
